Conducting In Situ Evaluations for and With Ubiquitous Computing Technologies

چکیده
To evaluate ubiquitous computing technologies, which may be embedded in the environment, embedded in objects, worn, or carried by the user throughout everyday life, it is essential to use methods that accommodate the often unpredictable, real-world environments in which the technologies are used. This article discusses how we have adapted and applied traditional methods from psychology and human–computer interaction, such as Wizard of Oz and Experience Sampling, to be more amenable to the in situ evaluations of ubiquitous computing applications, particularly in the early stages of design. The way that ubiquitous computing technologies can facilitate the in situ collection of self-report data is also discussed. Although the focus is on ubiquitous computing applications and tools for their assessment, it is believed that the in situ evaluation tools that are proposed will be generally useful for field trials of other techINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMAN–COMPUTER INTERACTION, 22(1 & 2), 103–118 Copyright © 2007, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc.

Ubiquitous computing offers many varied applications but will probably have its most significant impact on day-byday living. "The most profound technologies are those that disappear," wrote Mark Weiser. "They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it." Over the past decade, researchers have sought to understand the ways ubiquitous technologies wo...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Evaluation of Application-Led Research in Pervasive Computing
Pervasive computing researchers typically conduct their research through the development of prototype applications. Such research is motivated by a well-defined problem and evaluated by assessing the impact of deployed solutions. Accordingly, the evaluation phase assumes a critically important role in this process. Failure to sufficiently evaluate an application can have wide ranging negative e...
متن کاملGetting Real with Ubiquitous Computing: the Impact of Discrepancies on Collaboration
Ubiquitous computing is still a maturing field of investigation. The vision of the seamless integration of computers to people’s life has yet to happen, if it ever has to become a reality. Nowadays, most mobile, distributed systems and sensor technologies have their faults and limitations. Users of ubiquitous technologies often learn to avoid or rectify the systems failures. However, there is s...
متن کاملTowards a Discipline for Evaluating Ubiquitous Computing Applications
Though evaluations are being performed on ubicomp applications, it is difficult for researchers to learn from each other’s results. We believe that this is because no framework exists for conducting user evaluations of ubicomp applications. In this paper, we propose a framework in hopes of making it easier for researchers to learn from each other’s results, to create effective discount evaluati...
